Steve Carell to Star in Netflix Series Based on Trump’s ‘Space Force’

“The goal of the new branch is ‘to defend satellites from attack’ and ‘perform other space-related tasks’ or something”, Space Force Netflix trailer.

Comedic actor Steve Carell is set to star in a new Netflix series called “Space Force,” inspired by Trump’s proposal for a military space branch.

The show will be a workplace comedy “centered around the people tasked with creating a sixth branch of the armed services,” according to the streaming service.

This is based on a proposal by President Trump during his meeting with the National Space Council last June. He ordered the creation of “Space Command”—a precursor to the creation of a U.S. Space Force, a sixth branch of the armed forces joining the Navy, Army, Marine Corps, Air Force and Coast Guard.

The Pentagon immediately got to work on laying out the proposal, with Vice President Mike Pence saying they aim to “stand up the United States Space Force before the end of 2020.”

No doubt, it’s intended to establish a secure American dominance of the final frontier. Russia and China are our current chief rivals.

“It is not merely enough that we have American presence in space,” Trump said during his public proposal. “We must have American dominance in space.”

Carell co-created the new series and will executive produce, in addition to starring.

The project will reunite Carell with Greg Daniels, who adapted “The Office” from the United Kingdom to American television and served as executive producer. Another “Office” alum, Howard Klein, will also executive produce.

The series will mark Carell’s first starring television role since “The Office,” which ran for nine seasons on NBC, starting in 2005. The show was a huge hit and a milestone in the comedy genre. It currently ranks as one of Netflix’s most-watched acquired series—with sources noting that it often collects more viewers than some of its originals.

Carrell has since gone on to play acclaimed roles in feature films for both comedy and drama.

With this combination of talent, they are certainly capable of creating an intriguing workplace situation on screen—even if it’s out of this world.

In fact, it may not be that different from Scranton, Pennsylvania (the setting of “The Office”): according to Space.com, rather than deploying soldiers in space to engage in physical warfare or exploration, Trump’s proposed Space Force would be more mundane—focusing on national security and preserving the satellites and vehicles that are dedicated to international communications and observation.

Regardless, it seems to be enough material for the new show. A teaser trailer was released last week—set to the dramatic music of Stanley Kubrick’s iconic 2001: Space Odyssey, it hinted at the possibilities of this new setup:

“The goal of the new branch is ‘to defend satellites from attack’ and ‘perform other space-related tasks’—or something. This is the story of the men and women who have to figure it out.”

No premiere date has been announced yet.
