Lisa Page And Another Comey Advisor Resign From FBI

Two key figures in the FBI during the reign of former FBI Director James Comey resigned on Friday as an Inspector General report looms.

One of the aides was Lisa Page, who carried on an affair with FBI agent Peter Strozk as the two exchanged text messages with each other denigrating President Donald Trump. The two discussed ways to prevent him from being elected and contingency plans in case he was, The New York Times reported.

“I want to believe the path you threw out for consideration in Andy’s office — that there’s no way [Trump] gets elected — but I’m afraid we can’t take that risk,” Strzok wrote to Page in a text message on Aug. 15, 2016. “Andy” was a reference to former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe.

“It’s like an insurance policy in the unlikely event you die before you’re 40,” he said.

“OMG THIS IS F***ING TERRIFYING,” she wrote to Strozk on Election Day.

Page advised Comey on one of the most important things he did during the 2016 presidential election. That being his decision to hold a press conference and declare that Hillary Clinton was not facing charges in the investigation into her private email server.

The other person to resign on Friday was James A. Baker, one of the closest confidants of Comey, The Times reported.

In an interview with The Times, Baker said he was leaving to FBI to join the Brookings Institution to write for its national security blog Lawfare.

“I love the F.B.I.,” Baker said. “I have tremendous respect for the bureau — the F.B.I. was great, is great and will be great.”

“Mr. Comey relied heavily on Mr. Baker as he oversaw the politically charged investigations into Mrs. Clinton’s private email server and Mr. Trump’s campaign. After the president pressed Mr. Comey to say publicly that he was not under investigation, Mr. Baker cautioned against it because he anticipated that the F.B.I. would eventually have to examine Mr. Trump’s ties to Russia,” the Times wrote.

Comey issued a statement praising Baker in which he said that Baker “represents the best of the Department of Justice and the F.B.I.”

“He has protected the country and the rule of law throughout his career and leaves an inspiring legacy of service,” he said. “He is what we should all hope our kids become, a person of integrity.”
