Grammy-nominated pop singer Lana Del Rey is getting serious with a new song she released last week, in response to the recent mass shootings in Dayton, Ohio and El Paso, Texas only a week prior.

The pensive and quiet song was spontaneously recorded by Del Rey and uploaded to her Instagram page. It won’t even appear on her upcoming album, “Norman F–king Rockwell“, on August 30.

“Now I know I’m not a politician and I’m not trying to be so excuse me for having an opinion-but in light of all the mass shootings and the back to back shootings in the last couple of days which really affected me on a cellular level I just wanted to post this video,” she wrote on Instagram.

Entitled “Looking For America”, the song’s narrative is about traveling across the U.S. and observing everyday things like children playing in a park. Lyrics include: “I’m still looking for my own version of America. One without the gun where the flag can freely fly/No bombs in the sky only fireworks when you and I collide. It’s a just a dream I had in mind.”

Addressing the rising debate about safety in ordinary public spaces such as the bar and department store where the recent shootings took place, Del Rey sings: “I used to go to drive-ins and listen to the blues. So many things that I think twice about before I do.”

Reports have noted that sales of bulletproof backpacks have soared 200% to 300% in the wake of the recent shootings in Texas and Ohio. At least 31 people were killed in those attacks, with several more injured. The shooting in Texas was racially motivated against Hispanic Americans as well.

In the immediate aftermath, on August 7, there was also an incident where people fled Times Square in New York City after the sounds of a motorcycle backfiring was mistaken for gun shots. 12 people were injured in the commotion.

All proceeds from Del Rey’s new song will go to relief funds for victims of El Paso, Dayton, as well as from the shooting in Gilroy, California that occurred on July 28.
