Sinkhole Turns Out to be Secret Underground Tunnel to Bank

A sinkhole in Florida turned out to be an elaborate tunnel heading towards a Chase bank in Florida.

Public works employees in Florida may have inadvertently thwarted an elaborate bank heist when a sinkhole they were called to investigate turned out to be an underground tunnel leading to a Chase bank.

According to CNN, Pembroke Pines public works employees responded to a report of a possible sinkhole Tuesday night near a Chase bank but instead discovered the sinkhole was actually a tunnel about 50 yards long, with a power cord, boots, ladder, wagon, digging tools and small generator at the foot.

“It’s approximately 2-foot, maybe 3-foot in diameter. It’s very small, it’s very claustrophobic,” FBI Miami Special Agent Michael D. Leverock told reporters.

Although the tunnel didn’t yet breach the bank, the FBI is reportedly investigating the discovery as an attempted burglary.

“They’re heading towards the ATM. I don’t think they were doing that for any other reason,” Leverock said.

The tunnel’s entrance is in a wooded area across the street from the bank which is in a shopping complex. The tunnel’s entrance was covered by a wooden pallet, according to local Florida news.

Police used a remote control rover to enter the tunnel and follow it as it lead across the road toward the bank’s drive-up window.

No money was ever stolen from the bank and so far the FBI has no leads on who was digging the tunnel.

“We did not find a body in the hole,” the FBI said. “We don’t know who is behind this at this time. They could have been here a week ago, last night. We don’t know at this time.”

Hi Barbara!! Thanks so much for commenting and letting me know how much you enjoy our site! Your words of support mean more than any dollar contribution could mean, so thank you again!!! And I know what you mean about it not fitting the rest of the stories on our site, I almost didn’t write it up because of that but it was so unusual and interesting… we’ve done a few stories that are kind of oddity pieces recently so I think we are starting a new section for some of those lighter but intriguing pieces. Sometimes it’s nice to have not so heavy news!!!! If there are any more serious issues we aren’t covering that you would like us to cover, please let me know. We’ve been meaning to try and do a survey to make sure we are covering the issues you guys want covered!
