The Wave Of Roses: Exclusive Interview With Sarah Smith

The Wave Of Roses is a Citizens Truth series which highlights progressive candidates and organizations which challenge corporate Third Way control of the Democratic Party. This entry looks at key United States House of Representatives races for the reignited movement in the United States.

Sarah Smith is running to represent Washington’s 9th United States congressional district. Washington’s top-two ballot primary comes to a close on August 7th, and she is likely to move on to the November general election to face decades-long incumbent Adam Smith. However, the Washington state Democratic party has shown favoritism to her opponent.

As Sarah spoke about earlier in the year, the party has refused to give her access to the state Voter Access Network (VAN). Sarah confirmed the party has yet to grant her campaign access, leading to them resorting to grassroots apps in order to locate voters within the district.

She would also relay that fellow Justice Democrat Dorothy Gasque, who is running in Washington states 3rd congressional has also not been able to access VAN. When asked about Rep. Pramila Jayapal (WA – 7th) endorsing Adam Smith, she echoed similar sentiments as she did during her interview on the Humanist Report. During the following clip, Sarah mentions the work published here at Citizen Report.

Despite not currently having an endorsement from Jayapal, Sarah remains confident that her numerous endorsements will allow her to move on to the general election in November, likely against the incumbent Smith. Brand New Congress, Demand Universal Healthcare, Justice Democrats, Washington State Progress Caucus along with Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and most recently Shaun King.

Sarah also gave Citizen Truth a statement after her debate against Adam Smith and Republican Doug Basler on July 21st:

The debate went really, really well. I could not have asked for it to go better. It was civil and I got to speak to policy, demonstrate knowledge, and engage with both Adam and the Republican Doug Basler. I was glad to finally meet him finally (Doug). Adam was very civil and very polite, we shook hands, I greeted his staff, they greeted mine. At the end, there was a line of people asking for photos and to shake my hand. I even had a Democrat who previously disapproved of me let me know I impressed them and they were very glad I kept everything above board; no personal attacks, focus on policy, and a clean debate. I’m grateful I’m in this race with an incumbent who speaks to records, facts, and policies. We all got to flex our knowledge and make our case.

She also commented on the joint action between Grannies Respond and Veterans Service Corps, “I am proud of the Abuelas and Veterans coming together to bring humanity to the border crisis, but I am frustrated that it’s not our military out there providing basic necessities lite water and food. We need to resist the culture of violence we created and become the culture of humanitarianism that we all know we can be.”
