Democrats Outraged After President Trump Gets What He Wants From DOJ

President Donald Trump issued an ultimatum to the Department of Justice on Sunday and it did not take long for it to respond.

“I hereby demand, and will do so officially tomorrow, that the Department of Justice look into whether or not the FBI/DOJ infiltrated or surveilled the Trump Campaign for Political Purposes – and if any such demands or requests were made by people within the Obama Administration!” the president tweeted.

Hours later Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein gave the president his answer when he instructed the inspector general to investigate and find out if there was improper politically motivated surveillance of President Trump’s campaign during the 2016 presidential election campaign.

“If anyone did infiltrate or surveil participants in a presidential campaign for inappropriate purposes, we need to know about it and take appropriate action,” Rosenstein said in a statement, The Washington Examiner reported.

The decision had to be made by Rosenstein as Attorney General Jeff Sessions has recused himself from all matters pertaining to Russia.

“The Department has asked the Inspector General to expand the ongoing review of the FISA application process to include determining whether there was any impropriety or political motivation in how the FBI conducted its counterintelligence investigation of persons suspected of involvement with the Russian agents who interfered in the 2016 presidential election,” Justice Department spokeswoman Sarah Isgur Flores said in a statement of her own.

“As always,” she said. “the Inspector General will consult with the appropriate U.S. Attorney if there is any evidence of potential criminal conduct.”

Democrats were outraged by the president’s demand and the Department of Justice response.

“Trump’s claim of an embedded ‘spy’ is nonsense. His ‘demand’ DOJ investigate something they know to be untrue is an abuse of power, and an effort to distract from his growing legal problems. Never mind that DOJ has warned that lives and alliances are at risk.,” Rep. Adam Schiff said on Twitter.

“He has finally crossed the red line and ordered up a DOJ investigation of his political opponents, as well as career law enforcement agents,” former Department of Justice spokesman for President Obama’s Administration, Matthew Miller, said in a tweet.

The White House has not commented on the DOJ’s decision.
