World’s First Flying Car to Go On Sale In 2019
Transition, the world’s first flying car is set to go on sale next year. Transition is a two-seat automobile and aircraft that can be driven on highways and parked in residential garages, but unlike other automobiles, it can also fly. The land-air vehicle is being manufactured by Terrafugia Inc., a subsidiary of Chinese global automotive group Zhejiang Geely Holding Group (ZGH), based in Woburn, Massachusetts.
Led by CEO Chris Jaran, Terrafugia released a statement on the progress of the Transition.
“Terrafugia, Inc. announced new features in the Transition production vehicle, a two-seat auto and aircraft, including updates to the interior, safety systems, motor, and flight instrumentation. The latest features and systems will be incorporated and verified in the next test vehicles. The first production vehicles will come to market in 2019,” said a statement by the company.
The car-aircraft will have two wings which fold up when parked in garages and unfolds when it is ready for takeoff. Techxplore reported experts are calling the vehicle a “combination hybrid-electric road vehicle and pusher-style propeller-driven aircraft” with a conventional gas-powered engine and a lithium iron phosphate battery (LiFePO4) for hybrid road driving.
The flying car will have a range of 400 miles in the air and a maximum speed of 100 miles per hour but can cruise on land at normal highway speeds.
Jaran revealed that Transition complies with both vehicle driving and aircraft flying regulations. He stated the vehicle meets the requirements and regulations for highway safety and that of the FAA. The safety features installed to meet such requirements include airbags, seat belts and a parachute.
After introducing the world’s first flying car in 2019, Terrafugia has its sites set on the first Vertical Take Off and Landing (VTOL) flying car in 2023, according to ZGH, Terrafugia’s parent company.
“In line with our commitment to innovation and new mobility solutions, we acquired American flying car company, Terrafugia which plans to launch the world’s first commercially available flying passenger vehicle in 2019 and the first Vertical Take Off and Landing (VTOL) flying car in 2023,” ZGH stated.
