President Donald Trump has come out, guns blazing, against the Robert Mueller investigation and his former attorney Michael Cohen.

The president spoke on Saturday, one day after it was reported that Cohen had secretly taped their conversation about making payments to Playboy model Karen McDougal.

“Inconceivable that the government would break into a lawyer’s office (early in the morning) – almost unheard of. Even more inconceivable that a lawyer would tape a client – totally unheard of & perhaps illegal,” he wrote on Twitter.

Reports surfaced on Friday that Cohen had secretly recorded a conversation he had with the future president regarding a $150,000 payment that was made to McDougal. The payment was to purchase the rights to her story about an affair she alleges that she had with President Trump.

The FBI got a hold of the recording when it seized Cohen’s devices and documents during a raid on his home and office during the spring.

A judge then began reviewing what documents and other items would be allowed to be used by the FBI and which were considered to be protected by attorney-client privilege.

The president felt betrayed when he learned of the existence of the Cohen tapes, of which there are said to be more than one, when his attorney, former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani told him about them, CNN reported.

“I can’t believe Michael would do this to me,” Giuliani told CNN the president said. But Giuliani told The New York Times that the president and his team were not concerned about the content of the tapes.

“Nothing in that conversation suggests that he [Trump] had any knowledge of it in advance,” Giuliani told The Times.

He said that on the tape the president is heard telling Cohen that if he intends to pay McDougal, he should use a check in order for the payment to be properly documented.

“In the big scheme of things, it’s powerful exculpatory evidence,” Giuliani said.
