According to a report from ProPublica, an independent non-profit newsroom, Fired U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara was investigating Secretary of Health, Tom Price, for potential stock trade violations. Preet Bharara was fired by U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions after Bharara refused to resign upon the request of the Attorney General. The request for Bharara to resign was just one of 46 such requests for attorneys to resign, a practice not unusual for a new administration. However, Bhahara’s case garnered more attention because he had met with Trump at Trump Tower in late 2016 and Trump personally asked Bharara to continue his services as a U.S. attorney. Bharara tweeted after his firing, “By the way, now I know what the Moreland Commission must have felt like.” The Moreland Commission was an investigation into government corruption started by Governor Cuomo but then disbanded by Cuomo when the investigation grew to close to his office. As ProPublica reports Bharara was heading an investigation into Price’s stock trades. Price held stocks and traded stocks in health companies while he simultaneously voted on legislation affecting the industry.
