Grandson of Former VA Governor Indicted on Rape Charges
Twenty-year-old University of Virginia student, Stephen Dalton Baril, was indicted last week on charges of rape and forceable sodomy of a fellow female student. Baril turned himself in last Wednesday and attended his bond hearing later that afternoon via teleconference from jail. The victim was also present at the bond hearing. Baril is currently out on $10,000 bail but is under electronic monitoring and must remain at his parent’s house except for work and court appearances. Former Virginia Governor, John N. Dalton, is the accused’s grandfather.
The alleged incident took place last February in Baril’s apartment. According to the victim, they met at a bar and went back to Baril’s place. Upon exiting the bathroom, the victim found Baril had stripped down to his underwear. The victim claims she repeatedly told Baril that she was not going to stay and she asked him to “please not make this bad.”
According to city prosecutor Areshini Pather, Baril then proceeded to forcefully push the alleged victim onto his bed and sexually assault her, leaving bites or bruises on her lips, breasts, chin and arm. After the alleged incident the victim went to a local hospital for a physical examination which showed she suffered vaginal tearing. Pather stated that Baril sent the victim a text message the following day stating: “I’m sorry if I got overly excited.”
At Baril’s bond hearing, his attorney Rhonda Quagliana did not enter a plea on his behalf but said in court that they plan to vigorously contest the woman’s claims. Baril is due back in court on August 10th.
