Another day and another horrid school shooting. This time at Santa Fe High School in Texas, claiming the lives of eight students and two teachers. A lot will be written about gun control and the Second Amendment by a lot of people and none of it will mean anything to those ten families.

None of it will mean anything to the other students and parents, or the members of that community, who will have to live with this tragedy. But it is what we do. All of us, myself included.

As a conservative I’m a staunch supporter of the Second Amendment and gun rights. And, looking at the weapons that the shooter, who I will not name, used, you know that there is no gun law that has been proposed, and no gun law that could conceivably pass even a 100 percent Democrat Congress and president, that would have prevented that shooting.

I could get into the stats and the numbers. I could show you that the Columbine shooting and the Santa Fe shooting prove that banning the AR 15 would do nothing to stop these types of shootings, but even those points are moot.

Ten people are dead and another city, and our entire nation, is in mourning. As everyone retreats to their familiar positions to attack what others believe and defend what they believe, the entire process plays out again.

The question now is, what can we do to stop these shootings? What can be done to stop the slaughter of our children who just want to go to school as we did?

What one must comprehend, if they are an anti-gun progressive, is that the Second Amendment is never going to be repealed. It is enshrined in the Constitution and creating any laws that greatly infringe upon that right are not going to stand if they are challenged at the Supreme Court. And the fact that a shotgun and a .38 were used shows that only a ban on every gun could have had a chance to stop that shooting.

Even if you were able to ban every gun, there are more than 300 million guns in the United States that are not going anywhere. Your ban would do nothing.

For those of us on the conservative side, we have to know that doing nothing is no longer an option. Are there some gun laws we can agree to even if they won’t stop every shooting? If we did, would it matter?

I don’t believe it would and this is why. America does not have a gun issue. America has an issue with evil. It has an issue with how we are raising our children.

Of the deadliest mass shootings in America history, two happened before, and one in, 1986, the year automatic weapons were essentially banned in the United States. In all three of those shootings no automatic weapon, and nothing near an AR 15 was used.

Patrick Henry Sherrill murdered 14 co-workers at the Edmond Post Office in Edmond, Okla. on Aug. 20, 1986 using two .45 pistols and a .22 pistol before he killed himself. Charles Whitman murdered his mother and wife before he climbed the University of Texas Tower in Austin, Texas where he murdered 14 more people before police killed him on Aug. 1, 1966. His weapons of choice were a sawed-off shotgun, three rifles and three pistols.

And on July 18, 1984, James Oliver Huberty walked into a McDonalds in San Ysidro, Calif. Where he murdered 23 people with a shotgun and a pistol.

Those people had automatic machine guns available to them, as did everyone before 1986, and those are the three deadliest before that time. None of them used the most-deadly weapons available to them. None of the gun laws talked about today would have stopped them.

And as you look back further in time you find that bringing guns to school, where there were gun clubs, was common, yet we did not have the mass shootings that we have now.

I believe it is a culture issue. What we had in those days that we do not have now is a culture in which the mother was home to raise her children. Where those children were taught about God, morals and respect for the authorities, which included their parents, teachers and the police. Not every kid got a trophy and when a child misbehaved a spanking was not far behind. And when a kid was bullied they were told by their parents that sometimes you have to stand and fight.

Now what do we have? Both parents have to work, which means the kids essentially raise themselves, God is a forbidden topic in school and in the media, morality has gone by the wayside in favor of validating everyone’s feelings, respect for authorities is gone in a nation where we make heroes of people who fight the police and every kid has to be a winner because God forbid they have some disappointment and are told they need to work harder.

Kids are told to go to their teachers if they are being bullied, which never results in a solution and only enhances the bullying, and if you spank your child for misbehaving you could be the one in jail.

In an effort to shield our children from all the horrors of the world, we start pumping them full of drugs in their formative years if they so much as fidget in their seats in class.

Has this “progress” helped society? For it’s flaws when it comes to racism, homophobia and misogyny, was America and the world not a better, safer place in 1950 than it is in 2018 when kids were more nurtured and had to be tougher?

The truth is, if America wants to go back to the days when children were safe in schools, ultimately, it needs to go back to how it used to raise children to prepare for life.
