‘Harriet’ Returns to Theaters for Free to Celebrate Black History Month

'Harriet' Movie

Beyond telling the story of the runaway slave who became a leader in the fight against slavery during the 1800s, the biopic also explores lesser-known parts of Tubman’s life, such as her battle with epilepsy and her involvement with the Union Army during the Civil War.

An Oscar-nominated film about the famed slave abolitionist, Harriet will celebrate Black History Month by screening for free in early February.

Focus Features and Regal Cinemas announced the promotion on Friday, January 31. Directed by Kasi Lemmons, the film starred Cynthia Erivo as the iconic slave-turned-abolitionist, Harriet Tubman.

Erivo received several award nominations for the role, including an Oscar at the upcoming Academy Awards on February 9. She was also nominated at the Golden Globes and the Screen Actors Guild, as well as another Oscar nomination for Best Original Song (“Stand Up”), co-written with Joshuah Brian Campbell.

The Tony-award winning Erivo (from the musical “The Color Purple”) portrayed the runaway slave who became a leader in freeing other slaves during the second half of the 1800s. The biopic also explores lesser-known parts of the history-making woman’s life, such as her battle with epilepsy, her involvement with the Union Army during the Civil War, and her doomed marriage to a free black man named John Tubman while she was still a slave.

Also starring Janelle Monáe, Joe Alwyn, Jennifer Nettles, and Leslie Odom, Jr., Harriet was originally released in theaters in November of last year and did well at the domestic box office, as well as earning praise for Erivo’s performance.

February has officially been Black History Month since 1970, because it coincided with the birthday of Abraham Lincoln on February 12 and of Frederick Douglass on February 14 — both dates that black communities had celebrated together since the late 19th century because of the two men’s contribution to the freedom and rights of African Americans. The month-long celebration began as a way of remembering important people and events in the history of people of African descent.

The free screenings for Harriet will be at 50 Regal theater sites across the country, held on Feb. 4 and Feb. 11 — with two screenings per day. Moviegoers can get free tickets through Gofobo here.
