MSNBC Contributor Apologizes For Trivializing Death Of College Student

An MSNBC contributor has apologized after coming under fire for remarks she made that seemed to dismiss the murder of Iowa college student Mollie Tibbetts who, it was discovered, was murdered by an illegal immigrant.

The murder has sparked a political debate over illegal immigration with some saying that the murder is further proof that the immigration system needs to be fixed and every illegal immigrant should be deported. The other side of the argument says that murders happen every day by people born in the United States and one illegal immigrant does not represent the majority of hard working people stuck in the shadows.

But that debate has nothing to do with the furor over the comments of MSNBC contributor Christina Greer. During a segment on Tuesday, after President Donald Trump’s former campaign manager Paul Manafort was found guilty on eight felony counts and the president’s former attorney, Michael Cohen, pleaded guilty to eight felony counts, Greer was angered that Fox News had ignored those breaking stories to cover the murder of “some girl in Iowa.”

“I’m sure we’ll hear what (president Trump) has to say about this at his — his rally, but Fox News is talking about, you know, a girl in Iowa and not this, right?” Greer said.

“And, tomorrow morning, we know he’ll wake up in tweak and sort of, you know, besmirch the reputation of Michael Cohen and all the people around him and then go back to Mueller. And this has, obviously, been boiled down to Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama,” she said.

Her statement was shared on Twitter by NRA member Alana Mastrangelo and sparked widespread criticism of Greer.

On Wednesday, Greer responded to the controversy with an apology tweet.

“Yesterday I said something flippant that was unintended,” she wrote. “Mollie Tibbets was a promising young woman who lost her life. My hope is that her family will find peace & justice and that her murder is not used to justify a discriminatory immigration policy. #Apologiesaremyown.”

It has yet to be seen if she recovers from the controversy.
