White Helmets: Heroes or Propaganda?
(Northeastern.edu, Shraddha Kakade | Ruggles Media) Named last month as one of the four winners of the 2016 Right Livelihood Award,the White Helmets were also the subject of a recent Netflix documentary. The White Helmets are clearly glistening in the global spotlight, and their ever-increasing international support might win them a Nobel Peace Prize on October 7.
However, as the support for the Syrian White Helmets gains momentum, with a petition to that effect, ‘Give the 2016 Nobel Peace Prize to Syrian White Helmets,’ a counter petition, ‘Do Not Give the 2016 Nobel Peace Prize to Syrian White Helmets’ (http://chn.ge/2bDFrXK) has also been making the rounds.
As this contest of digital activism unfolds, it begs the question: who exactly are the White Helmets?
