Arizona Republican Sen. John McCain, a Vietnam War hero and 2008 candidate for President of the United States, died on Saturday at the age of 81 from the brain cancer he was diagnosed with in 2017.

“Senator John Sidney McCain III died at 4:28pm on August 25, 2018. With the senator when he passed were his wife Cindy and their family,” a statement from his office read. “At his death, he had served the United States of America faithfully for 60 years.”

Coincidentally Sen. McCain died nine years to the day that his close friend, Democrat Sen. Ted Kennedy died from the same rare form of cancer, glioblastoma. The same cancer also took the life of former Vice President Joe Biden’s son Beau.

President Donald Trump tweeted shortly after the news broke, offering his support for the family of the senator with whom he has clashed extensively since he was campaigning for president in 2016.

We saw this country as a place where anything is possible – and citizenship as our patriotic obligation to ensure it forever remains that way,” former President Obama said in a statement.

“Few of us have been tested the way John once was, or required to show the kind of courage that he did. But all of us can aspire to the courage to put the greater good above our own. At John’s best, he showed us what that means. And for that, we are all in his debt. Michelle and I send our most heartfelt condolences to Cindy and their family,” he said.

His wife, Cindy McCain, said “My heart is broken. I am so lucky to have lived the adventure of loving this incredible man for 38 years. He passed the way he lived, on his own terms, surrounded by the people he loved, in the place he loved best.”
