“That’s where change comes from—it doesn’t come from old politicians. It’s always young people.”

Academy Award-winning actress Charlize Theron (Mad Max: Fury Road, Monster) will host a fundraising event for the Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project on Nov. 12 at the Africa Center in New York City. The event will also include a special musical performance from classic R&B group Boyz II Men.

The 44-year old Hollywood actress was born in South Africa and began the program in 2007 to bring awareness to the youth in her home country, as well as in sub-Saharan Africa. The program invests in organizations that prioritize and advance the health, education and community support of citizens between the ages of 10 and 20. It also focuses on the demographic group’s susceptibility to HIV and AIDS, a particular issue for them in Africa.

Theron has also served as a United Nations Messenger of Peace since 2008. She was selected as one of Glamour magazine’s “Women of the Year” this year, where she spoke about her advocacy.

“I love working with young people because when I look at all of the issues we have faced in our history, it’s always young people who have the ‘f–k you’ to not give up,” she said. “That’s where change comes from—it doesn’t come from old politicians. It’s always young people.”

The actress also recalled her motivation to start her outreach project, when she observed there were only two small mobile health clinics in all of South Africa, to treat the disease-ravaged nation.

The Africa Center, where the upcoming fundraising event will be held, just launched public programming in January and is guided by a leadership team that includes former president Bill Clinton’s daughter, Chelsea Clinton.

For the November 12 engagement, guests will dine on South African cuisine by chefs Geoffrey Zakarian, Andrew Zimmern and Teranga Restaurant’s Pierre Thiam.

The partnership between Theron and 1990s R&B group Boyz II Men began when the latter made a cameo in Theron’s comedy Longshot, with Seth Rogen.

Donations to Theron’s outreach project can be made on the website https://charlizeafricaoutreach.org/.
