Major City Considers Changing Name Because Of Slavery

It is no longer only Confederate monuments and names of schools that are considering name changes in order to be more racially sensitive and appease the calls that they are an homage to racism. Now a historic city is also considering changing its name.

As part of a report made by Austin’s Equity Office in Austin, Texas, officials have recommended the that state capital of Texas change its name because it is named for Stephen F. Austin, affectionately referred to as “the father of Texas.” The said the city should consider changing its name because Austin, the man, opposed banning slavery when Texas was part of Mexico 200 years ago.

The panel also recommended that the city change the name of certain streets and neighborhoods that honor Confederate leaders and military, reported the Austin American-Statesman.

Austin led a revolution against Mexico which was started when Mexico decided to ban slavery. Austin was opposed to the idea which led to a war that found Tejas, as it was then known, to gain its independence.

The panel also recommended renaming Pease Park, the neighborhood of Bouldin Creek, as the creek was named for former slave owner William Barton, referred to as “the Daniel Boone of Texas.”

This is not the first time the city of Austin has tinkered with street names. In April the city renamed streets that were named after Confederate heroes Robert E. Lee, the top general of the Confederate army and Jefferson Davis, the president of the Confederate States.

But the decision by the council to rename those streets was met with opposition by the residents, much in the same way renaming the city of Austin and more streets is being met now.

Renaming streets only requires a simple majority vote of the council but renaming the city is not that simple.

Renaming the city would require a change to the city’s charter which would only come via an election by the city’s residents.
